Third Sunday in Epiphany Sermon: God knows us fully, writing our days before they began. Now he stands on the shore of our ordinary lives and calls us by name. Repent, follow, and join the one body of Christ. The kingdom is at hand, and the light has already dawned on us.
“I Am Jesus Whom You Are Persecuting.” Saul contributed resistance; Christ supplied everything else. Grace stopped the persecutor, forgave him, and sent him as a witness. No sinner is beyond Christ’s reach simply because he appears beyond ours.
The Conversion of Saint Paul, January 25. The risen Christ asked: why are you persecuting me? To persecute the Church is to persecute Christ himself. The man who came to Damascus to close eyes was sent to open them. The reversal is total.
Second Sunday of Epiphany: In a single sentence, John the Baptist connects the entire history of Israel's redemption to Jesus. He bridges the ancient Passover night in Egypt with the eternal deliverance accomplished in Jesus. And he issues an invitation that still echoes today: Come. See. Behold.
“Flesh and Blood Has Not Revealed This.” Matthew 16:13–19. The Feast of the Confession of Peter. The Father revealed what human wisdom could never discover. The Church does not confess Christ because it figured him out. It confesses him because the Father revealed him.
January 18 is the Feast of the Confession of Peter. Not a feast about a great man, but about a great answer to a great question: ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ The Father revealed it. Peter said it. The Church has been asked to keep saying it ever since.
