Sexagesima is the traditional name for the second Sunday before Lent. Still within Epiphany, it reminds the Church that Lent is drawing near and calls us to prepare by hearing God’s Word more attentively, clearing away what chokes it, and depending upon the grace of Christ.
World Mission Sunday begins with the compassion of Jesus. He sees the crowds as sheep without a shepherd, declares that the harvest is plentiful, and tells his disciples to pray earnestly for laborers. Mission begins with God’s grace, moves through prayer, and sends the Church to make Christ known.
World Mission Sunday. The collect: through the outpouring of the Spirit you revealed the way of eternal life to every race and nation — pour out this gift anew. Not for the first time. Anew. Until the Gospel reaches the ends of the earth.
Simeon waited for the consolation of Israel. Anna waited for redemption. Then an ordinary-looking family entered the Temple carrying a child. The Lord had come to his Temple, and Simeon could say, “My eyes have seen your salvation.”
