The Collect refuses to sentimentalize the story. It acknowledges the rupture caused by Judas and then turns immediately toward the faithfulness of God. Matthias is chosen “in the place of Judas,” and the Church prays to be delivered from false apostles and governed by faithful and true pastors.
That preparation must remain grounded in grace. Confession does not persuade an unwilling God to forgive, and absolution is not a prize for those who have achieved adequate sorrow. Christ has borne sin upon the Cross, and the penitent comes because mercy has already been opened through him.
Quinquagesima therefore does not need to become Lent before Lent begins. Its task is more particular and more beautiful: to end Epiphany well. The season of manifestation ordinarily closes in white, with Christ’s glory shining before the Church, and only then do Christians receive ashes.
That movement belongs at the heart of the Gospel. God does not save us because we successfully ascend to him. He comes to us. The eternal Son takes our flesh. He enters our world, bears our sin, goes to Jerusalem, and accomplishes the salvation we cannot accomplish for ourselves.
Transfiguration Sunday brings the Season of Epiphany to its proper climax. The Father who identified Jesus at the Jordan speaks again from the cloud, Moses and Elijah bear witness to him, and the disciples are granted an extraordinary manifestation of the glory belonging to the incarnate Son.
Sexagesima therefore holds together preparation, grace, and mission. The Church prepares because God has acted first. She repents because mercy has called her, and she bears witness because that same mercy is meant to be proclaimed to every race and nation.
