Joseph never speaks in the Gospel record. His faith is known almost entirely through what he does. He receives Mary when God tells him not to fear. He names the child when God tells him his name. He rises in the night when danger comes. He carries the child into exile and brings him home again.
Ember Days hold these truths together without confusing their order. Their primary Prayer Book purpose is prayer for those called to Holy Orders. Their broader horizon is a Church in which every gift is received from God and ordered toward the building up of Christ’s Body.
The Collect refuses to sentimentalize the story. It acknowledges the rupture caused by Judas and then turns immediately toward the faithfulness of God. Matthias is chosen “in the place of Judas,” and the Church prays to be delivered from false apostles and governed by faithful and true pastors.
The Great Litany endures because the needs it names endure. The Church still needs mercy. We still need deliverance from sin, error, violence, disaster, temptation, and death. The Church still needs faithful bishops, priests, and deacons. The nations still need peace and justice.
The Exhortation therefore does not stand between the Christian and the Table. It prepares the way to it, teaching us to come neither carelessly nor fearfully, neither presumptuously nor despairingly, but with what the Prayer Book asks of Christ’s people: a truly penitent heart and lively faith.
Friday fasting gives the Christian week a regular rhythm of repentance, prayer, self-examination, and mercy, returning the Church again and again to the Cross of Christ.
